L-Asparaginase is an anticancer enzyme used mainly in the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).
It works by breaking down the amino acid asparagine in the blood. Leukemic cells cannot synthesize asparagine on their own, so depletion of asparagine leads to inhibition of protein synthesis and cancer cell death.
It is given by intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) injection under strict medical supervision.

L-Asparaginase Injection 5000 IU is used for:

• Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL)

  • In children and adults

• Lymphoblastic lymphoma

• As part of combination chemotherapy regimens

Common Side Effects

• Nausea and vomiting

• Loss of appetite

• Fatigue

• Fever

• Injection-site pain (IM use)

Serious Side Effects

• Hypersensitivity reactions / Anaphylaxis (rash, breathlessness, shock)

• Pancreatitis

• Liver toxicity (elevated liver enzymes, jaundice)

• Coagulation abnormalities

  • Bleeding or thrombosis

• Hyperglycemia

• Hypoalbuminemia

• Central nervous system effects (confusion, drowsiness – rare)

Dose depends on body surface area (BSA), protocol, and patient response.

Typical Dosage (General Reference)

• Children & Adults:

  • 5,000–10,000 IU/m² per dose

  • Given IM or IV

  • Frequency: every other day or 2–3 times per week, as per chemotherapy protocol
