Megestrol is a synthetic progestin (hormonal agent).

It is used in oncology and supportive care to stimulate appetite, promote weight gain, and also to treat certain hormone-dependent cancers. It works by affecting hormonal pathways and appetite regulation.

Cancer-related Uses

• Advanced breast cancer

• Endometrial (uterine) cancer

Supportive / Palliative Uses

• Anorexia, cachexia, and weight loss associated with:

  • Cancer

  • AIDS (HIV-related wasting syndrome)

Side effects may increase with higher doses or long-term use.

Common Side Effects

• Increased appetite

• Weight gain

• Fluid retention (swelling of ankles/feet)

• Nausea

• Constipation

• Fatigue

Hormonal & Metabolic Effects

• Menstrual irregularities

• Decreased libido

• Erectile dysfunction (in men)

• Hot flashes

Serious Side Effects

• Thromboembolism (blood clots: DVT, pulmonary embolism)

• Adrenal suppression (especially on sudden withdrawal)

• Hyperglycemia (raised blood sugar)

• Hypertension

Dosage depends on indication and patient condition.

Cancer Treatment

• 160 mg daily (may be given as a single dose or in divided doses)

• Dose may be increased as per oncologist’s advice
